Red Sox Dustin Pedroia Likely to have Hand Surgery

It would appear the handwriting is on the wall for Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia and surgery on his injured left hand.

Pedroia did not play against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night because of inflammation in his left thumb and a decision is expected Wednesday on whether he will require season-ending surgery.

“He and we are still gathering information,” said Red Sox manager John Farrell. “It’s moving towards probably a procedure, but nothing definitively scheduled right now.”

“His long-term health is the most important thing. That will always be kept in the forefront,” manager John Farrell said.

Pedroia  Has struggled with the injury the entire season.

Pedroia has hit .278 this season with a .712 OPS, both career lows. He has seven home runs in 551 at-bats.

Pedroia has a .397 slugging percentage, a sharp decline from the .461 it was prior to that. Pedroia hit .238 in 16 postseason games last fall, .208 in the World Series.
