Of the 82 percent who already know about eSports, 29 percent actively follow the sport. Of those interested in eSports, 27 percent are women and 73 percent are men. 31 percent of eSports enthusiasts are between 16 and 17 years old and only 18 percent between 35 and 44 years.
Overall, almost half of eSports enthusiasts prefer to watch the games live (48 percent) than on demand (23 percent). Of those who prefer to follow digital sports live, 53 percent use the Twitch platform, 44 percent use the official websites of the organizers and 38 percent use YouTube.
Younger and men watch Fortnite – Older and women FIFA
The most important eSports series include games such as “League of Legends” (LoL), “Dota 2”, “Counter-Strike”, “FIFA”, “Fortnite” or “Call of Duty” (CoD). The online games draw in each case a diverse audience: The top 3 online games watched by men are, for example, Fortnite (36 percent), FIFA (30 percent) and Counterstrike (26 percent), while the top 3 women are FIFA (34 percent), CoD (30 percent) and LoL (27 percent).
Fortnite is much more popular with younger people than with older people. While Fortnite is by far mainly watched by 16 to 17 year olds (46 percent), FIFA is mainly watched by 35 to 44 year olds (47 percent). Most of those who watch LoL and CoD are between 18 and 24 years old (31 percent and 30 percent).
Almost everyone who watches eSports also plays themselves (91 percent). And it is above all the same games that are played and watched in the tournament. Because the most popular games among male fans are Fortnite (33 percent) and FIFA (29 percent). Female fans most often play FIFA (28 percent) and CoD (24 percent).
