Why do cats have rough tongues?
If you have ever been bitten by a cat you may be surprised at how hard their tongue is. The rash on your hand is caused by tiny blobs facing backwards called papillae. Papillae contain keratin which is a protein molecule that makes up hair and nails. For millions of years the ancestors of the cat have evolved into languages like this to serve two main purposes.
- Beauty
The small tubs look like a scale and help keep the cat coat on top. As well as helping prevent the coat from getting matted; a swollen tongue will remove dead or loose hair.
- Eating
The ancestors of the cats hunted and killed their animals in the wild. For them it may be necessary not to waste any meat obtained from the slaughter. The tongue of the thorns would help them to remove the flesh from the bone so that they would actually do all the killing.
Cat tongue is what all kitty owners should know
Cold tongues are cool. They are also shocking and rough, scratchy, hard and totally incomprehensible to look at – but often cool. This is a no-brainer on the number of scientists who have provided comprehensive studies and papers on the differences in cat languages.

This can cause problems, especially if the hair follicles are not properly digested. Cats with long hair get a boost of conditioning from regular grooming, which removes loose hair so they don’t have to.

If your cat’s tongue isn’t cut properly, it’s a good time to plan a visit to the vet. Reasons for good hygiene can range from obesity to pain, illness, malnutrition and other factors. Many [cats] react very quickly to their appearance, and self-cleansing is important not only for their [their] behaviour, but also for their feelings.
