Staff Selection Commission – Combined Graduate Level Examination is commonly referred to as SSC CGL. This examination is conducted to recruit eligible job seekers for various government jobs. These jobs are in various departments of the Union Government and organisations directly controlled by the Government of India. Syllabus for Each Stage of SSC CGL Examination

SSC CGL Examination is divided into 4 tiers; namely Tier I, Tier II, Tier III, And Tier IV. Examinees will have to appear for the Tier I examination first and clear it successfully. Then they can appear for SSC CGL Tier II and Tier III examinations, if shortlisted, based on the marks obtained in Tier I. Examinees passing Tier II and III, will be called for the final Tier IV examination. Tier III and IV shall be attempted only by a certain section of candidates who apply for the particular post.

Tier I of the SSC CGL Examination

SSC CGL Tier I is a computer-based examination that can be answered online. It comprises the objective type of questions with multiple choices for answers. This questionnaire is divided into four sections – General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension.

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning – This section contains questions on analogy, coding and decoding, similarities and differences, analysis, word formation, relationship concepts, matrix, non-verbal series, figural classification, visual memory, observation, arithmetical reasoning, number series, decision-making, and statement conclusion.
  • General Awareness – This section contains objective questions on Indian history, general knowledge about India, and its neighbouring countries. The questions will be based on culture, geography, economy, scientific research, current affairs, science, books and authors, people in news, important schemes, sports, important days, current chief ministers and governors in India, and portfolios.
  • Quantitative Aptitude – This arithmetical section offers questions on simplification, decimals, fraction, simple and compound interest, averages, profit and loss, discount, percentage, time and distance, square roots, time and work, ratio and proportion, problems on ages, mensuration, graphs of linear equations, geometric problems of triangles, sphere, circle, quadrilaterals, polygons, cylinders, cones, and hemispheres, trigonometric ratios, bar diagram and pie chart, prism, and histogram.
  • English Comprehension – This section comprises fill in the blanks, spelling corrections, synonyms and antonyms, phrases and idioms, reading comprehension, one-word substitution, sentence reconstruction, active and passive voice, spotting errors, sentence improvement, and cloze test.

Tier II of the SSC CGL Examination

SSC CGL Tier II is also an online examination, with objective questions and multiple choices for their answers. This question paper has four sections – Quantitative Ability, Statistics, General Studies (Finance and Economics), and English Language and Comprehension.

  • Quantitative Ability – This section contains questions on all chapters of basic arithmetic, geometry, mensuration, and trigonometry taught at the secondary level.
  • Statistics – The knowledge about the basic concepts of statistics is checked in this section. It is easiest to score in this section if examinees are thorough with all those concepts.
  • General Studies – This section is further divided into Part A and Part B. Part A contains questions on Finance and Accounts for 80 marks, and Part B contains questions on Economics and Governance for 120 marks.
  • English Language and comprehension – This section contains questions set for checking the basic knowledge of English. The comprehension related questions are intended to check the quick-mindedness of examinees.

Tier III of the SSC CGL Examination

SSC CGL Tier III is a descriptive examination that has to be answered with paper and pen. This offline examination asks students to write essays, letters, applications, and précis in English or Hindi. The time allotted for the examination is only 60 minutes for total marks of 100.

Tier IV of the SSC CGL Examination

SSC CGL Tier IV is a skill test essential for all government jobs. Examinees can appear for this examination after clearing the Tier I, II, and III examinations successfully. Examinees need to pass two skill tests in Tier IV – Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) and Computer Proficiency Test (CPT).
